And not just escape tourism. Business travel too.

I may be just small potatoes, but my refusal to take onsite work in the US since the orange menace took office again has meant that 3 people who used to spend ~40% of their time in US hotels, eating at US restaurants, and paying US transportation costs, are now staying in Canada or picking up the pace with EU clients.

There is not one Canadian who didn’t like the States or its people; however, your President alienated Canada in its first term, and most of us got over it. But for a high-end dignitary holding a grudge and threatening Canada with a military takeover in his second term, that doesn’t sit well with Canadians. We were brothers and sisters, we were family before. So in essence, I’m not sure about you folks, but friends and family do not shit on their own. It’s like cornering a dog with no place to go; someone is going to get hurt, and changes will be made along the way. Too bad you Yanks are so wrapped up in your ‘president’, you don’t see a storm coming.

Plus, something like 20-40% of people are proudly pro trump. That’s a lot of idiots and selfish turds. They’re not all concentrated in Texas and Florida, either. I see a trump flag on one of my regular walks in Brooklyn

Its not just casual tourists staying home. I follow real estate prices like condos in the touristy parts of Florida and the market is flooded with sellers and prices are dropping significantly. Realtors are saying they have had condos on the market for four months without a single inquiry because the market is saturated with sellers and no one’s coming down to buy. Canadians are fleeing their vacation homes.

It probably doesn’t help that the Canadian dollar is quite weak in the US.

But also why go somewhere that is threatening your country’s sovereignty …

And there are so many other places in the world to see anyways.

It probably doesn’t help that the Canadian dollar is quite weak in the US.

      I don’t buy this argument.

One year ago the USD was at $1.39. Today it’s $1.40.

In 2025 USD peaked at $1.47 in Jan but then dropped to $1.38 by April. The lowest it was for 2025 was in the summer months - as low as $1.35.

If you look at the 2024 season the USD sat around $1.36-1.38 for most of the summer with a dip in Aug to $1.34.

2024 and 2025 really weren’t THAT much different during the tourist months.

I don’t honestly think a couple of cents is going to make a difference to Snow Birds and vacationers. What does make a difference is a fascist fat fuck saying he’s going to turn your homeland into part of the USA and ICE thugs nabbing random people off the street. I’m not going anywhere near that shit even if the USD was sitting at $.50

Our vacation this year could have easily included a jump to the US for a couple days. If we took this trip in 2024 we would have.

Yeah, fair enough. A weaker dollar always been a negative about going to the US rather than a recent development.

Our vacation this year was also not in the US and it was nice to go somewhere the CAD was stronger. I guess that would have always been the case.

In any event, I’m not going back for awhile and ICE definitely plays a huge part in that and all that other fascist stuff.

ICE is a huge risk for a traveller. They’re running as a lawless gang. No accountability.

I want my vacation to be fun but there is a non-zero chance of getting nabbed by ICE in the US. Combine that with the US policy of any idiot can and should own a gun.

The US is a crazy 2nd world shithole and doesn’t offer anything worth the risks.

            Just a point of order:

The terms First, Second and Third World were cold war references to the power blocs (Allies, Soviets, unaligned).

If you mean to say backsliding in terms of development, say that.

Third world is an inaccurate description for ‘undeveloped’ countries.

That’s the thing with language it evolves to mean other things. Everyone equates “3rd world l” to mean poorly developed /or dirty/ or destitute, now.

Like the UK uses hoovering to mean vacuuming, because Hoover was the go to brand in them old days.

Just let people use words how they want LOL

If we are going to have a conversation about an important topic, we have to use up to date terminology to do so. Third world ain’t it. The USA was the fricking anchorpiece of the First World. Calling it third world is just lazy and stupid. I won’t stand for it.

I get your frustration, (fr me its when people and programs use font, really its a typeface, and font is something else) but people have moved on, 3rd world now means No Healthcare, lack of education, contaminated water, etc. And the USA is moving into that realm.
