    Yeah, looks like it.

The advert clearly hopes to give the impression the seat will move you around (like a simulator) but what it actually says is that you move the seat yourself and the seat acts as a controller.

Pretty clear you’d try it fot 10 mins like “okay kinda neat I guess” then never use it because controlling the game by throwing your body weight around is so much harder and less precise than just using a controller.

  • I feel like I’m in the same boat. I don’t have a solution, just wanted to say I understand your perspective.

I’ve completely ditched Microsoft from my life and I’d love to ditch Apple too, but there’s just nothing on the market I’ve seen which matches the build and usability of macbook hardware.

With the old Intel macs it was simple enough to run Linux but now with Apple Silicon it’s not on the cards. I love what the Asahi team have been doing and I hope they keep doing it, but it’s not ready for primetime yet.

And so I’ve reached the same annoying conclusion - for the moment I’m stuck with Mac, and therefore stuck with macos too.

  • The amount of space is the amount of space. You can’t create more, because it’s literally constrained by the roof of the plane. It’s already maxed out.

The only thing they could do to make sure there was “enough space” is to have less tightly packrd seats and carry less people, which again they aren’t going to do for the obvious reason - profit.

Or - reduce the max carry on baggage dimensions, which I’m sure people would equally complain about. And would make them look worse against other airlines which “allow” bigger bags, despite there not being enough space to put them!

  • The luggage problem has only got worse and worse over the past decade, and by the airlines’ own making. Carriers all started trying to make extra cash by charging for checked luggage, which incentivises people to take carry-on only, up to the maximum size and quantity of carry-on they are permitted.

If bags could be checked for free and people took only an under-seat carry-on for the things they need in flight it wouldn’t be a problem, but we know that’s never going to happen.

  • Applying the term “Indie” to a book feels interesting to me, because almost all books, even ones that are part of intensely popular franchises, are written by a single author - so in a sense, all books are Indy.

Of course team size is only one aspect. There’s also budget and commercial involvement. But budget doesn’t have to be a constraining factor for books the way it is for movies. And if you’re the only person pushing the keyboard keys then you are the one with ultimate creative control.

If you are a penniless author and publish a hit and get rich, does your next book then stop being indie, even though it’s still just you? Or maybe it’s no longer indie because your circumstances have changed.

  • That comes with its own risks because Windows has been known to destroy dual boot setups when doing updates. Not always, but it can happen and it’s burnt people.

Dual booting also makes it harder when you decide to get rid of windows fully, because you might yourself accidentally screw your bootloader as part of removing windows.

The option I would personally recommend if you are unsure is to disconnect your windows hard drive, keep it safe, and install Linux on a separate drive. Then you can always drive swap back if you need and you know everything is safe.

You can even put the windows drive back in after installing Linux, and then just use your BIOS boot drive selector to switch where you are booting from. Each drive has it’s own boot record in that case, so there’s less risk of any accidents.

  • You could argue the other way around - growing up with decent and non-predatory practices makes you less tolerant of when companies try to extort you because you already know what “good” looks like.

I’m sure the corpos would love nothing more than kids getting exposed to predatory practices from a young age so they grow up feeling those things are acceptable and normal.

  • I’m not sure how you can make the points you make, and still call it a “generally brilliant solution”

The entire point of this system - like anything a giant company like Hertz does - is not to be fair to the customer. The point is to screw the customer over to make money.

Not allowing human employees to challenge the incorrect AI decision is very intentional, because it defers your complaint to a later time when you have to phone customer support.

This means you no longer have the persuasion power of being there in person at the time of the assessment, with the car still there too, and means you have to muster the time and effort to call customer services - which they are hoping you won’t bother doing. Even if you do call, CS hold all the cards at that point and can easily swerve you over the phone.

It’s all part of the business strategy.
