  • We don’t get new tech without pushing boundaries. We’d forget how to make phones in a single generation if we stopped… We’ve forgotten how to get to the moon already. Space X is just continuing cancelled NASA projects, but they had to basically start over

You want to learn to terraform here? We’ve only got one shot. The only current idea that makes any sense is to just stop releasing CO2 and hope everything bounces back… But we might be past the tipping point. If you want to find out, you need satilites

You only get to keep our level of technology by growing new engineers. They need goals and toys, and they need challenging problems

You want to learn how to terraform the earth, safely? You want to maintain GPS and the Internet? You want to learn how to better clean sewage and the air?

It’s not either or. You can do everything you said while also letting the best and brightest play with rockets. You can shoot for Mars to save the earth

You just can’t do it for profit

  • So I think where popsci messaging is bad is because they get all mixed up between particles and waves

A superposition isn’t a particle, it’s a wave. It only has the mass/energy associated with the particle, but it is everywhere it can be all at once

The particle is like… The minimum size the wave can fit into. One photon of light can jump one electron up once energy state, and it has to pick one electron to actually do this

You can channel the wave into a particle long enough to measure it, but to measure any aspect of the wave you have to consume it. Now you’ve converted the energy from one form into another, so any other information that could have been gained is destroyed

That’s my understanding at least, it is very much not digital. There’s no either or, it’s even more analog than analog

  • Jesus was a revolutionary. He removed all weaknesses that could be used against the Jewish people, from temples to stockpiles to using money. He made the early church suck resources from an occupying force while giving nothing back, not even disobedience that could justify a crack down

In this process, he replaced many rituals with simpler versions that can be done without any special requirements. He reworked every ritual so that it couldn’t be taken away, it couldn’t be used to force compliance

Paul was a true believer and philosopher, his job was to sell it to the people. His words were canonized alongside the gospels because they were convenient when reframing Jesus’s teachings with the values of the Roman religion… Plenty less convenient writings were buried instead

Paul was a transitional figure who found himself in between the early church and unexpected gentile converts… He had to rebrand the rituals for a wider audience while keeping the core message. Nothing against the guy… He was in an impossible position and did his best

  • Lol, imagine if showers stacked. You could spend a week showering and then all filth just disappears when it touches you

But then, what happens to the filth?

The only way I see this working is if you shower, you just continuously wash filth off yourself. But then does it all just kick in when you walk out of the shower? Or maybe, you never become clean until you’ve washed a lifetime of filth off yourself, then you’re clean forever

I’m imagining every baby just covered in sludge, and after years of washing they become clean. Imagine your kid just never gets cleaner, and everyone just thinks you’re a terrible parent. Imagine cleaning your kid and they become clean way ahead of schedule

There’s some real existential horror here

  • Yeah, I don’t know why we glorify military service. It’s just exploiting people to enforce exploitation overseas at this point

But even aside from that, I feel like this is in bad taste… They just finished fucking over all the trans people in the military. The tone is like telling someone “you’re welcome here” as they’re lying there after being thrown out

It’s like saying “well, I believe you’re an American” as they’re put on the plane. Just doesn’t seem like the right thing to say in that moment
