In China? I’ve read that sentence like six times I’m not quite sure what you’re alluding to, but China’s had fiber for about 10 years now. The reason they allowed it is because increasing everyone’s bandwidth doesn’t really make the job of monitoring them any harder. It’s still the same number of connections. Plus it allows businesses to be competitive on the global market.
Also they kind of assume their firewall would work. Initially it did work, at least for the majority of people, but over time that more and more have learnt to use a VPN and now the whole thing’s a bit of a pointless exercise. There is a massive disconnect in China between the younger generation who use VPNs and the older generation who just consume state media.
It’s not a technical anecdote.
It’s just an example of the problem with the technology. Why do you presume that the end result of all of that is anything remotely technical? The end result of all of that is a really complicated and boring subject matter to mostly do with how you build roads, it involves computers but the end result isn’t computers.
Your problem is you have a certain idea of what AI is and what it can be used for and you forget that that doesn’t apply to the whole universe.
Until it can ingest arbitrary URLs that contain documentation, images that contain relevant information need to be OCR into knowledge articles, random emails somebody sent me 6 months ago, and teams chats, it isn’t much used to me.
The truth is most work that AI could do hasn’t been optimised for AI usage it’s been optimised towards random organic human usage which AI is totally incapable of ingesting.

Honestly you could do a lot by just charging a high rate of tax on people who own homes but don’t live in them. Encourage them to drop those properties back onto the market.
There are lots of very useful uses for AI. But they’re all in a lab or sitting away on a service somewhere crunching numbers. The general public doesn’t need to know about them and largely doesn’t know about them.
They certainly don’t need to be selling access on the internet so that people can program rather crap apps.
I’m sure the VPN industry will bring a lot of money to bear to ensure this doesn’t happen. They like the online safety act itself, because it brings them customers, but if it also causes them to face issues they’re going to be less keen on it.
Well personally I have used it but I can’t really find anything useful for it to do. It’s very mathematics and programming orientated which is useful if your job involves a lot of mathematics or programming. If not erh, it’s basically just an interesting toy.
