Reminds me of the way NFTs were pushed. I don’t think any regular person cared about them or used them, it was just astroturfed to fuck.

Governor Stitt’s family paid their way into Cherokee rolls. He’s a grade A shit bag, he’s even joked about it in public.
I imagine they then switch to blaming all of your problems on HRT, based on my experience.
Tummy troubles? Must be the T! Athletes foot? You should half your T dose!
It’s more fun when the problem involves them dying anyway.
[Introducing KE formula] “Would you rather be hit by a semi truck or a lime scooter? What if the lime scooter is going really fast and the semi truck is just slowly moving through the parking lot?”
“If I drop [student who is currently on their phone] out of an airplane, ignoring air resistance, how much kinetic energy will they have when they smack into the ground? Is that an “elastic” or “inelastic” collision?”
Or “spaghettification” when doing gravity. Or “yeah, if a gamma ray burst happened to point at earth, it would wipe out all of human civilization.” Or “if the sun went out we wouldn’t know for about 8 minutes.”
Physics is phun.
And you have to traumatize them a little bit for lab safety. I remember my upper div physics lab back in undergrad started with like a full two hours of “these are all the ways you can die in here.” I always make sure to talk about Karen Wetterhahn in my own safety lectures.

I think this Sean video is one of the best things on the topic I’ve ever read/seen if you have two and a half hours.
I come down on the side that the atomic bomb was unnecessary. Japan was already looking at potential surrender (maybe not the kind of unconstitutional surrender where you let a 22 year old military aide/translator write the constitution over a couple of days…). The decision to drop the bomb was far more motivated by a desire to present a threat to the USSR and to dominate the world stage than it was to end the war.
The very first person I came out as trans to was my sister while playing Minecraft. The next day, my dad wanted to have a talk….
If you want to see real hardcore “back to 1066” stuff, check out Anglish. Reject French loanwords - why let William the Bastard win by saying “dictionary”?
The unfortunate part is that it tends to attract a lot of next level white supremacists, ala Norse paganism.
andros_rex@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is your personal threshold for being grossed out by owning an object that was once part of a living being, and why?20·6 days agoEthics are the big line for me. The human remains market is pretty infamous for having dubiously sourced parts - people who did not consent to having their body bought and sold.
The exhibit Body Worlds, which travels to different museums, is an example of this. Some of the bodies are likely executed prisoners, who did not consent to have their bodies displayed in this way. The US has a horrible history of treating indigenous peoples corpses with disrespect. Two of the children who died in the MOVE bombing ended up in a universities collection without the knowledge or consent of their relatives.
I would be willing to have a skeleton or preserved organs as teaching materials, if I knew the individual involved gave their consent for that use. If I ever can afford a hysterectomy I would love to preserve my uterus for that purpose. I’d love to be an articulated skeleton in a science classroom after I’m done here on earth.

Some of the stuff I’ve seen on RuPaul has made me cringe, but I’ve also seen queens that dress up like church marms and do a Betty Bowers/old school Colbert skewering of the Christian right.
andros_rex@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•So the recent hate towards Pedro Pascal is JK and her loyalists making shit up because he spoke out that she's an awful person?6·6 days agoIt’s exhausting, because once you debunk them on something, they just move on to something else. It’s easy to just make up shit, it takes work to prove it wrong. There’s no guarantee anyone sees the debunking either.
If you open that link, you’ll see a 2500 year old porn vase.

It’s absolutely unhinged. Rowling also has them denying that Nazis killed trans people - they’ve started to claim that the Nazis issued “transvestite passes” (which the Weimar Republic did - famously not the Nazi government) based on a book of photographs someone published of Nazi soldiers doing drag.
The Nazis tortured and murdered trans people. Some did drag because they thought it was funny, heck the US military did official drag shows during WW2. People do drag because it’s funny, that doesn’t mean they accept trans people. It’s unhinged how willing people are to lie and spread the lies of others in order to justify their hate.
You can go up to “insecta” for “bugs” in general.
If you wanted to be nit picky/old school you could exclude all non-heteropterans from “true bugs.”
Springtails and isopods are good “clean up” crews. Usually reptiles, but you can also do cool bioactive set ups for rats.
Springtails are also not bugs and are hella under appreciated. They are absolutely adorable under a microscope, but you just can’t find great pictures online.
Not a bug technically, an isopod.
People pay stupid money for rubber duckies:
If I had cash, I’d want a giant one:
I always called them Rollie pollies. My brother in laws earliest memory of me is me explaining how good they were to eat.
I’m a black sheep because I couldn’t shut up. Mom abused me and probably fucked my disabled younger brother. Rather than acknowledge that, it’s easier for everyone to pretend that I don’t exist.
To be fair, most Arthur stories are using Le Morte D’Arthur (15 century) as their main inspiration. Even the earliest stuff is 11th century.
There is a dearth of proper low Middle Ages stuff for sure though.
andros_rex@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Transgender, nonbinary and disabled people more likely to view AI negatively, study showsEnglish1·14 days agoKnowledge based fields were historically a “safe space” for queer and disabled people. If you are just super fucking smart and could be a wizard in a programming language, or were a genius physicist, you could get to the point where you were too valuable to fire for being trans or disabled. I may be trans and an unperson in the place I live, but I can do calculus, and there’s no way they can take that away from me.
There’s an attack on knowledge itself going on right now. A desire by the rich to control information. They want to force us into an unreality where skill and knowledge are meaningless. This hurts people who are socially marginalized, because it takes away one of our few paths for economic survival.
It goes with the attacks on DEI. What they want is a tool that can replace the need for talent, so that they can select who gets to have jobs. They want all jobs to be Graeber’s “bullshit jobs” so that skill is meaningless and they can allot them out to the people they think “deserve” them.
You don’t do sex rituals to summon the antichrist? Lame.
