  • I’m not into tarot that much (I just like the art usually, doubly so if it’s from an IP I’m a fan of), but if she is or ever was into Neopets, the Neopets Tarot Deck on their merch site is only $22 and is pretty nice.

It comes with a guidebook in case you need tips or instructions on how to start, or just need a refresher on things. The art on the cards is fantastically done, with each card representing what it is extremely well with just the picture alone. Plus, each card is packed full of lore and little nods to different NP plots/characters from over the years. The guidebook tells you what each card represents/means, plus a description of the art and how it pertains to the card, and a bit of fun lore/callbacks (like the Game Graveyard being the representative art for the Ten of Swords card, or Tor being the Knight of Pentacles)

  • There are so many mods for Zomboid, some of them are staples that never leave my modlist. I have a mod that replaces almost all the headgear on zombies with a headcrab from Half-Life (you can loot and wear the headcrabs too), as well as a couple “occupations” based around a Black Mesa security guard, or an HECU marine.

There’s the whole host of True Music add-ons, which all add actually listenable music to the game, in the form of cassettes, records, or CDs. There is also a collection of mods called True Action, that give you more emotes and animations for your character, such as dancing or actually sitting on a chair or bed instead of just the floor. Tons of vehicle mods too; plenty of real-life vehicles from all kinds of eras (the game takes place in the 90s, so I usually like to keep the 90s aesthetic) but there are plenty of “lore-friendly” ones that have made-up names for the cars. Mods that add interiors to RVs so you can have a mobile base, mods that make you able to add a basement to your house/base, new maps (one I have called Project Russia, and it’s basically the surrounding area outside Moscow, also a huge map)…

  • I remember playing the original because I got it with Games with Gold on Xbox. I couldn’t even get past the first (second?) boss in that cathedral it was such a bullshit.

But The Surge 1+2? Those are cool games with interesting lore that’s actually fed to you, so you don’t have to go searching for little scraps of lore from item descriptions or cryptic NPC dialog. And it’s fun to play, but can still be kinda bullshit sometimes. I still haven’t finished either one though.

  • GMod spawned an entire YouTube subculture in the early 2000s. DasBoSchitt made those Idiot Box videos (which I fucking loved when I was a kid), and there were tons of others. In fact, I remember Machinima made a feature-length movie entirely within GMod, about the “Mingebags” taking over the entire game. I think the guy who helped create that Harvie Krumpet short film worked on it, too.
