Eh, Ubuntu used to be a decent desktop distro, but they’ve made some… choices. You can do better. Mint gets recommended a lot, but that also feels dated. It depends on what your use case is. GNOME vs KDE is a lot more important, find the one that you like better because that’s how you’ll be interacting with it all day. KDE is more like Windows, GNOME has a more Mac feel.

If you don’t want to tinker with it, you just want it to work and want to use your apps as is, go with an immutable distro (e.g., Bazzite like OP suggested). You can’t easily mess up the important bits that keep it running and as long as you reboot it from time to time you’ll always have the latest updates. IMO, unless you actively want to mess with the underpinnings of your system, an immutable is the best way to go.

Bazzite is gaming focused, but if you’re not a gamer, there are others (e.g., Kinoite). But in my experience, they just work leaving you to do what you actually want to do, not fight with it to make it work.

Yeah, I’ll take an appimage if that’s what I can get, but it’s not my favorite way to deal with it. I’m on Bluefin, so it’s flatpak and homebrew for me.

Yeah, there is a lot of focus on getting your site out, but I just ignore all that part. I just wanted a nice place to self-host my travels without having to think much about it and it seems to fit that bill. But yeah, there is a place to discover other feeds and to comment on other people’s posts from the Fediverse and what not.

I jumped on Meshtastic but found it got too congested with noise in a medium-sized city making it difficult to get much out there. Switched to Meshcore and have had a much better time communicating. Seattle’s full on made it equivalent to SMS, which makes me jealous. But YMMV 🤷🏼‍♂️

In the Lemmy word, sure. I was referring to Mastodon where there is no hot or rising. It’s just based off of who you’re following and when you check. Hence likes doing nothing but informing the poster of your appreciation.

Your edit is a bit like that in the Fediverse in general. Since there’s no algorithm, liking a post in Mastodon does nothing beyond letting op know you appreciate them. I like that.

In general, you should treat anything you post on any social media like an op ed in a newspaper. Once it prints, there’s no taking it back.
