No critical part of Windows actually requires the TPM. The limitation is 99% artificial. Which is why people keep finding workarounds.

About the Signal protocol: It’s end-to-end encrypted. It would not allow for the server to give you a customized feed. Also messages expire but I’m not sure if that’s to the protocol.
Fair. But since RAM is one of the easiest parts to upgrade you don’t need to future-proof it much imo. Just add a stick when it’s cheaper
For gaming you don’t really need 16GB yet. Maybe after the next gen of consoles is out, developers might start using that much RAM. But then OP can just add a stick or two
Sorry if I wasn’t clear. I did mean OP should not consider NVidia + Linux
I think the price difference would more more less reflect in the perofrmance difference for these setups. So whatever you need and can affort is the right choice. Unless you intend to install linux, then the AMD one for sure.
I assume you mean the 5070ti? Depends on what OS you intend to run, which games, what CPU you have (driver overhead), what the local prices are like and how much belief you have in AMD Redstone being good.

I understand FPGAs have a larger potential of emulating hardware fast. But it’s not like the chip designs for these old consoles are open source. So FPGAs are usually not cycle accurate either.

Robin@lemmy.worldto PC Master Race@lemmy.world•Low power on idle/light use and 4K/144 Hz output and streaming focus buildEnglish1·1 month agoAh yeah this is going to perform more like a 4060 and indeed does not have good upgrade options. Maybe have a look at the minisforum motherboards, like the minisforum ar900i S. Those come with soldered on laptop CPUs. So you get the power efficiency of a laptop but with full desktop connectivity. I also just did some web searches to find my power numbers. It probably varies a bit on which card, which vendor and if they measure wall power or directly from the connectors. An iGPU does consume some power but if you look at the 12W total system power of the framework desktop, only a few of those watts can be the iGPU.
Robin@lemmy.worldto PC Master Race@lemmy.world•Low power on idle/light use and 4K/144 Hz output and streaming focus buildEnglish5·1 month agoOh actually, the Ryzen AI max PCs like the Framework Desktop just about fit in your budget. Those should outperform the 8700G on every front AND use less idle power because they are often used on mobile.

Robin@lemmy.worldto PC Master Race@lemmy.world•Low power on idle/light use and 4K/144 Hz output and streaming focus buildEnglish4·1 month agoHave you considered an APU like the AMD 8700G? Not having a dedicated GPU at all will save you about 20-30W of idle power. It will play the games you listed at 1080 low. Gives you some more budget for a platinum or titanium rated PSU as well. Go for a slightly slower SSD that doesn’t need a heat sink. Those things can use a lot of power too. Too bad ATX12VO never took off in the DIY space because that standard is specifically designed to have less concersion losses. Maybe there are some business PCs that do use it.

If you were to try to pick the worst, still supported distro for gaming that might be it. Maybe RHEL could be worse? If they chose it for stability like they claim they did they should have also used an LTSC version of Windows and the Pro drivers to compare to.

Robin@lemmy.worldto PC Master Race@lemmy.world•Help for MicroATX build, budget around 7-800€English4·1 month agoWell on one hand yes, GPUs are expensive because of the AI hype. But also, iGPUs are way more powerful than they used to be. AMD supplies APUs for the PS5 and Xbox. So basically the only GPU that is a worthwhile upgrade from an iGPU is the RX 9060 XT 16GB, at around 380 euros.
If it were that important to Microsoft then they should just refuse to boot without the chain of trust. I’m guessing they can’t because of backwards compatibility reasons. Maybe they will with Windows 12.
