Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•I spent the night for a stupid reason at a police station and people know it without knowing the reason behind it, what would be the most honorable way to get around this unfortunate episode?
6·4 days agoIt’s really nobody’s else’s business. They could do that for literally nothing.
It’s hard to justify centrism in the context of the US, where one party is radically attacking peoples’ rights and re-writing the constitution to support it.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•My therapist says she might have to report my abusive family to the authorities. How do I avoid being reported so the cops don't show up and make everything worse?
8·8 days agoThe therapist needs to have some reason to believe that a person is a threat to you or someone else. One purpose of the law is establishing community standards. Even if a single family all prefer to do nothing about the abuse, the community as a whole does not want to tolerate that kind of behavior in it. So really, it’s not supposed to help. It’s supposed to punish, to try to stop the behavior.
It depends on the fabric. A lot of synthetic clothes are now made to do well in the dryer. But if it’s 100% cotton, it can be permanently ruined in the first dry.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do crappy parents defend their child when they are masively publicly misbehaving and being shitheads?
11·28 days agoSome people respond to correction by lashing out. That’s true for literally everything. Telling them you can’t smoke there, not washing their hands is gross, you need to take off your shoes in my house, etc.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is there no instution or person that Trump go after? Or we are all just screwed?
34·29 days agoThey could literally impeach him tomorrow. This is not a one man show. It is a choice. They’re choosing to make themselves richer and make you poorer, to make themselves more powerful and to make you more vulnerable. Not just Trump.
There isn’t a “science”. There are a ton of individual projects. Some of them are good investments and some of them are bad investments. Ultimately it’s not our money to decide how it’s spent, and if we want something that isn’t currently being studied to be studied, we have to add it on. Really, considering how little % of the economy we need to spend on acquiring what we need to survive, it makes sense to invest our economy into intellectual pursuits.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•At this point, what should we do about the ICE raids? If an ICE agent breaks in without a warrant or holds you at gunpoint, what do you do?
828·30 days agoPersonally I’d just comply. They’re thugs, not law enforcement. They’ll hurt you and there will be no recourse available. If they’re there for someone else, I’d probably comfort that person and ask if there’s someone they’d like me to call.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Would you take pills that stop you from caring about the state of the world?
3·1 month agoTo an extent my brain already does that. The most I’ve done is join a protest that marches a few streets and back. Like, I’m not picking up my life and dedicating to helping those people. I’m just mildly upset and concerned while still trying to accumulate wealth and skills to improve my employment.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Does asking yourself “Where would I have put that?” work for you?
2·1 month agousually if I left keys/phone/wallet in my pants pocket on the floor, that’ll work.
but most of the time, it’s somewhere random that I would never think of.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Those of you who cut off all comms with your parents, what would it take to mend things and reestablish contact?
11·1 month agoI am low contact, but she is way too mentally ill to have positive relationships with people. I sympathize that she can’t control it, but it’s kind of like asking me to put my hand on a stove to please someone else. I truly gain nothing but unpleasant feelings from being around her. I feel nothing but aversion to the thought of being around her. Even as a child I avoided her.

I had a bit of a rough time with my first civ pro reading, but the professor was amazing. Like I had a moment where I reflected in amazement that the horrible reading and awesome lecture covered the same material.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If you do a lot of meal prep for your lunches at work, what do you do?
1·1 month agoIt just doesn’t bug me to eat the same thing all week, and I’d certainly rather cook less than more. Salads and sandwiches might be good for you, because you can change the fillings.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is it worse to be hurt by an enemy, or be inadvertently hurt by someone that is supposed to love you?
41·1 month agoThat’s the point. Negligent actions often aren’t intentional. You can be negligent and not intend to harm someone. Not knowing things you should have known is hurtful.

22·1 month agoThere’s often an element of negligence though.

Ask Me Anything@lemmy.ca•I went to ICE protest in Destin Florida
12·1 month agoHow’d you feel after? Ours in PGH had a low turnout but I always feel better after going. Less alone.

No, the opposition did win an election a few years ago! They performed horribly, but it is in fact a functional democracy. Just one that prefers to function within one party.
