Linux@lemmy.ml•Linux is awesome at home, but aren't y'all forced to use Windows at work?
4·1 month agoI got permission from HR and the CTO to install GNU+Linux on the work desktop.
Why did you switch, and what was your process like? What made you choose Linux for your primary computing device, rather than macOS for example?
Free, installs on my existing hardware with near-zero effort. I have it installed on old yet still functional Macs that Apple doesn’t provide security updates for anymore.

13·1 month agoI am looking forward to GNU+Linux usage share numbers a year from now. I think it is very likely to pass 5%.
If X11 is so good why is there no X12?

Linux@lemmy.ml•What are the silliest reasons people have given you for not wanting to try Linux?
3·2 months agoIt translates Windows API calls to X and POSIX API calls. Theoretically it comes with a performance hit but as benchmarks have shown that is usually not the case as both Wine and the entire system as a whole are more efficient than Windows. Wine will fail whenever an application requests an API call that is not implemented yet, sometimes copying DLLs from Windows helps, sometimes…

Linux@lemmy.ml•Frustrated Windows users are switching to Linux because of Microsoft’s Windows 11 shenanigans
4·2 months agoYou don’t have to distro hop to switch desktop environments. You can install KDE Plasma (5.27 though) on LinuxMint.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Has bad branding ever turned you off from software, FOSS or not?
1·2 months agoNo, otherwise I wouldn’t have used GNOME in the past. I stopped using it because it changed too much for me not because its logo is a smelly foot. I also think KDE Khas Kterrible Kbranding but I still use it now that I prefer it to GNOME and got bored with MATE.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Why do NetBSD and OpenBSD have more lines of code than Linux?
11·2 months agoThis is why I typically refer to it as GNU+Linux and not just Linux. Two different and incompatible operating systems can use the same kernel just look at Android and GNU+Linux. Each of the BSDs is a complete operating system (userland + kernel).

Linux@lemmy.ml•How to start as a not very tech savy person
1·2 months agomacOS has a terminal and sometimes you will still have to use it even if not as often as *Linux, except that it works differently from GNU+Linux distros and even from BSD that you will have fewer resources to rely on.

31·2 months agoIt looks like you want SteamOS. I recommend either getting a Steam Deck, wait for the Steam Machine or install it compatible hardware if you have any. No Nvidia GPUs.
SteamOS checks all three requirements for the most part, maybe 3 not so much. But it will be near impossible to fuck it up as it has a read-only filesystem and all apps are installed through flatpak which are sandboxed similar to apps on iOS.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Valve's new Steam Machine and Steam Frame and implications for Linux

If the industry gets together this could be Google’s PS/2 and OS/2 moment.
Historical context via Wikipedia:
The PS/2 line was created by IBM partly in an attempt to recapture control of the PC market by introducing the advanced yet proprietary Micro Channel architecture (MCA) on higher-end models. These models were in the strange position of being incompatible with the hardware standards previously established by IBM and adopted in the IBM PC compatible industry. Most major PC manufacturers balked at IBM’s licensing terms for MCA-compatible hardware, particularly the per-machine royalties. The OS/2 operating system was announced at the same time as the PS/2 line and was intended to be the primary operating system for models with Intel 80286 or later processors. However, at the time of the first shipments, only IBM PC DOS 3.3 was available. OS/2 1.0 (text-mode only) and Microsoft’s Windows 2.0 became available several months later. IBM also released AIX PS/2, a UNIX operating system for PS/2 models with Intel 386 or later processors.
